This is your family. This is your tribe.
13 January, 2012
The moon is in the waning Gibbous (Galliard) Moon phase (69% full).
"Fuck," Devon breathes out, the word lacks any vehemence, spoke as the first thing that likely came to mind. "Sorry," he adds, a fraction of a second later. His glass is taken to the sink, hand coming out of his pocket to rake through his hair.
Down the hall, a door opens and closes. Footsteps approach the stairs, but then hesitate, and a moment later Kavi appears at the doorway to the breakroom.
Flint has been back in the tenement for a little while of the evening, now, but the cub has spent that time showering and cleaning up in the bunkroom, and generally being quiet. Footsteps in the hallway echo shortly after Kavi's, and then pause, the cub ducking a nod of greeting when he gets to the doorway, though he lingers right outside.
Riley lurches up to his feet not long after Devon, carrying his plate and glass towards the kitchen. He pauses a moment as Kavi appears in the doorway and flashes a brief grin and a simple, "'Ey." Then proceeds to quietly rinse his glass out in the sink, frowning fixedly as the water washes down the drain.
Mouse seems to have entirely forgotten about her slightly eaten cake. It's still sitting on the armrest of the couch, and she's rubbing her eyes again. Mega Man 2 lies paused and also forgotten on the TV, though the controller's still in her lap.
Devon glances up at Riley as he sets his cup down in the sink, a half step back to let the Fostern finish his work before actually cleaning the dishes. He turns slightly, a look angling toward the door at the sound of footfalls not within the breakroom. Seeing Kavi there, he tries for a half grin, failing.
Kavi glances behind him as the cub approaches, and his brows pull downward. He gives Riley a look, surprise registering in his expression. "Hey," he replies, and offers Devon a nod as well, before his attention turns to Mouse. "Mouse-rhya," he says, finding a small smile for her, and he moves the rest of the way into the room, heading toward the elder.
Riley stifles a yawn with the back of his hand and heads for the hall when he's finished rinsing up. He pauses and leans against the wall, "Not quite the levity I was hoping to instill, but I can't say I blame you. That's… a hell of a thing." The young man frowns, "If anyone needs me, I left my cell number on a post-it note. Right there by the delicious-looking cake." He gestures, "As for me, I need some air. Back in a bit."
Flint seems to be relatively cheerful, a larger nod acknowledging everyone in the room, Riley given a nod in parting. A faint furrow of the cub's brow when he sees Devon, but nothing is said. Instead, the boy just follows Kavi into the room, a step or two behind, then going to lean against one of the chairs at the table.
Mouse lifts a hand to Riley, before looking over to Kavi as he approaches. "Hey." She sounds tired. "Get my email?"
When Riley takes off, Devon turns back to the sink, either not noticing Flint or choosing to ignore him. He sets to washing the pair of glasses and the dishes cake had been eaten off of, gaze focused on the task.
"I did," Kavi answers, but his gaze follows Riley. "He came back, too?" he asks. As he turns back to Mouse, he looks across to the new Cliath and there's a narrowing around his eyes.
"Yeah," Mouse says. She falls to rubbing at her eyes again. "Just today, I guess."
Rinsed dishes are set aside, albeit briefly. Devon's soon turning off the water and finding a towel to dry with. "Met him a couple of days ago," he interjects quietly. "Asked about a place with a Mouse around this area. Told him I knew of one and that the roaches were friendly."
Kavi seems to consider Devon's information, but doesn't have any response to it. Instead, he takes a seat near the elder, and gives her a long look. "Do you need any help?"
Flint seems to be tired, as well as cheerful. The long moment of leaning on the chair might have included the cub closing his eyes, before he walks over to sit on the floor a little bit away from the couch, propping his head up on one knee.
"Yes," Mouse says, wearily. "But mostly just with what I mentioned in the email. Being able to teleport to the Caern and back would also be helpful, because I didn't get any fucking sleep last night."
As they're dried, Devon returns the dishes to their proper place. The counter is wiped off and, after, the towel is folded and set beside the side. "Unless you or Kavi-rhya need anything, I'm going to go back to the bunk room for a while. Heading back out to Edgewood early."
Kavi nods once to Mouse and then turns his attention to Devon. Barely having seated himself, he rises, and shifts position so that he can see both Devon and Flint without moving. "One thing," he says. "Something you both need to learn. To understand. Something that cannot be taught, but must be understood." He draws in a breath, giving a moment for those words to sink in. Then. "This is your family. This is your tribe. There is no law that you must like one another, though if you can learn to do so, you will both be happier. There are laws about respecting one another. And you will do so. You will treat one another with the respect of family, of tribe, and of garou. If you do not understand how to do so, speak with Cheese Doodle; she is a philodox. I do not wish to see or hear about any further disrespect. From either of you."
Flint sits up all the way, knee still hugged to his chest, but chin no longer resting on it, and the cub nods. "Yes, Kavi-rhya," he acknowledges. A wary glance is given in Devon's general direction, after Flint falls silent again.
Mouse lifts her chin, her attention sliding toward the cub and the cliath as Kavi speaks. Her eyes narrow a little, though her expression otherwise remains the same as it was; tired and hard to read.
"Yes, sir," Devon replies quietly, staring ahead and at nothing particular. His jaw tightens briefly as he stands, waiting for anything further to be said.
Kavi doesn't seem to have anything further, and once his words are acknowledged, he takes his seat again. He looks to Mouse, concern etching itself into his features, but after a moment, tears himself away and turns a softer look to Flint.
Flint looks down, away from Devon, gaze flicking to Kavi as the cub rests his head on his hands and knee once more.
Mouse seems content enough to leave it at that. She picks up the NES controller, looks back to the screen, and finally unpauses the game. She's not really concentrating too hard on Mega Man's trials, however, that's clear.
Devon waits just a few seconds longer, still looking at nothing of consequence. When he's sure nothing more is going to be said or done, he moves away from the sink and out the door. Nearly a moment later, after his footsteps have partially faded, the door to the bunk room can be heard opening and closing.
Flint looks up again, to watch Devon leave. The cub is quiet for a long moment, before looking up at Kavi and Mouse, brows furrowing for a moment before there is a faint, hesitant smile, though whatever it is he wants to say, he hasn't figured out the words yet.
Kavi watches Devon go, and then turns back to the cub. His brows rise in unspoken question, inviting the boy to speak.
Mouse, to all outward appearances, remains intent on the game. It may look a little silly, the Walker elder playing Mega Man 2, but that certainly doesn't appear to be a concern of hers right now.
Flint nods acknowledgement, still taking a moment to put the words together all the way. "This is the first place that's ever… felt like home. Like family," the cub says, though there's far less insecurity in his voice than there once was. "Devon… asked me, what I was thinking about, once, and then more or less, scoffed when I told him, that. And…" It may be water under the bridge now, but it's still bothering the boy.
Kavi listens, his attention fixed on the boy. When he trails off, the older galliard nods. "He didn't understand. He. He didn't come from the same place as you." He glances to Mouse, and then back to Flint. "None of us did. We all. We all have our own scars. Our own history that we wear in different ways. His made him who he is, and he's Ahroun, and the moon weighs on him even more than on us. It doesn't make it okay for him to disrespect you. But you need to understand it. To accept that his pain is as real as yours."
Mouse tips her head without looking away from the television. "Not everyone is as happy to pop into this life and leave everything behind as you are. Most people aren't, in fact."
Flint nods, both at the words from Kavi and then from Mouse, glancing to the Elder as she speaks. The cub is tired from his day, visibly so, and the processing of information is more evident on his face than usual. "That makes sense, I think," he says, quiet. "I didn't have much to leave, to leave behind."
Kavi nods as well, a slow up and down. "You're learning. And you'll continue to learn. And soon, you'll be Cliath, and able to make more decisions on your own. The lessons you learn, now? The things you take away from this time? They'll be the foundation for all the decisions you make, as an adult. But who you were before you came here? That will always be a part of you, too. Does that make sense?"
Mouse remains quiet, again letting Kavi talk. Her fingers work the buttons of the controller in a way that doesn't really seem attached to her, as if they were doing it entirely independent of her conscious input.
Flint nods again, hands pushing up to prop his head up. "Both of the, together, form parts of me," the boy affirms, still visibly sorting things out. "Yeah. It makes sense." A yawn is stifled behind one hand, followed by a grin.
Kavi watches Flint, a small smile forming in response to the nod. "Enough for tonight. You. You should probably sleep."
Mouse finally sends the tiny blue figure hurtling to his doom off a bottomless cliff. She doesn't seem terribly down about it. Flint gets a glance.
Flint grins, the next yawn not stifled at all. "Should, yes," he says. "Played chase and tag and, at Edgewood in the backyard today, in lupus. Fun, but." An even wider grin and yawn follow as the cub pushes himself to his feet. "G'night, Mouse-rhya, g'night Kavi-rhya."
"Stay safe," Kavi says with a nod for the cub.
Another yawn is stifled as Flint makes his way out of the breakroom, and tired, shuffling steps can be heard making way to the bunkroom.
