I should be better at this, at dealing, at calm.
28 July, 2012
The moon is in the waxing Gibbous (Galliard) Moon phase (68% full).
Kavi's gaze dips at Thomas's response, looking up again when Nick returns, to shake his head. "Nothing. Really? I just said. I don't want to put you in danger. I want to find out who she's been with. And where. And when. I have some places to start. Some of the clubs. But it's harder, because. Because that?" He pauses, gesturing at the two drawings of Rose. "That's not what she really looks like. She can change her face. And we can't see it, when we look at her."
Thomas crosses one leg over the other, and asks, casual-like, "She like big rats?"
The elevator door dings open, then, and a moment later, Flint comes into the lobby, half-huddled into his sweatshirt, but well awake. The tension of the moon weighs evident on the cliath, and doesn't ease when he notes the gathering in the lobby, though Flint nods. And then sets to pacing the wall where the elevator is. "Kavi-rhya, Lex is going to… is coming over," he says, a little abruptly. "Soon. She'll be here soon."
And, sure enough, not very long after Flint says that, Alexandra finishes locking up her bike and appears on the monitor showing who's at the door as she hits the buzzer to request access to the building.
Nicodemus makes a mildly frustrated, mildly perplexed expression with his face after Kavi speaks. "That's not a whole lot to go on," he observes. He nods towards Flint as the young Walker enters. Then the doorbell rings. "How's that for timing?" he quips.
Pack> Flint says, "Thanks, for. For coming."
Pack> Alexandra says, "No problem. About time I get back here, anyway. Too much going on not to."
Pack> Flint says, "Lot, yes. And… I'm sorry, for. Not telling you sooner, it's just been. Crazy, and hard."
Kavi blinks once at Thomas's question, brows pulled downward in confusion. "Not… I don't think so?" As Flint arrives, he looks across to him, but he tenses when the boy speaks. "Oh," he says, just barely heard, and glances toward the door. Swallowing, he looks back to Nick with a shake of his head. "No. Not yet. It's why… I don't know what you would ask, yet. If you went to the clubs and talked to the bar tenders? You could ask about Rose? And who she's talked to as Rose? But. Until we find out what other faces she's used?" He shakes his head again.
Thomas taps his fingertips together He spares a brief glance for Flint, and for Alexandra, but it's clear where his attention is at.
Flint pushes off from the wall to go over to the door and get the door, letting his packmate into the lobby and staying relatively close to her once she does, though he heads for the seating area not the elevator back up.
Pack> Flint says, "Let's wait for, Kavi to be done with this. I don't know if he wants to, talk here. Or. Or upstairs."
Alexandra is still breathing a touch hard, and she wipes sweat from her forehead as she enters despite it being a relatively cool evening. "Hey, Flint." Giving the room a quick scan as she comes inside, she starts her greetings with the Adren Galliard. "Kavi-rhya. Mr. Dalton."
Nicodemus nods to Alexandra as she arrives, then asides to Thomas, "Whoever did that, if she was around or watching, would be blowing their cover. Unless," the former detective and private investigator theorizes, "they intentionally were blowing their cover so as to be bait. And a second person was around and discretely keeping tabs on who followed or took an interest in the bait." Pause. "Very dangerous game to play, though."
Pack> Alexandra says, "All right. With luck, the jackass won't talk to me, and I can just ignore him until he leaves."
Kavi frowns and nods, but once Alexandra is in the lobby, he doesn't say more.
Thomas shakes his head at Nick's words. "I'm sure I wasn't seen," he says, with confidence that he probably shouldn't have. "But it'd be a poor lead in any case. Don't think that guy was knowingly in on it, even if the two are connected somehow."
Flint just stays by his packmate, for now, looks between Kavi and Alexandra once and over to Kavi again, but then to Thomas, and Nicodemus, and the cliath Walker is silent.
Pack> Flint agrees. "Something like that. And he'll ignore you, and. All works."
Alexandra leans against the wall as the conversation goes on around her. The Shadow Lord stays quiet, her own attention seemingly turned inward.
Nicodemus looks a little confused about what Thomas said. "Wait. You've already been casing the clubs looking for her? Or…. Did I miss something?"
Pack> Flint says, "Talk about something, anything, anything except the effing vampire. Help me focus?"
Kavi pushes off from where he leans against the arm of the chair, but he doesn't go anywhere, simply rises. "The other news I have," he says, glancing again to Flint, "is that I've heard back from Slug. The packmates can't reach Riley. They can't feel her. But their totem insists that she's alive. I. I think we need Nieve to help. Or maybe… Maybe one of the Ranger's theurges. Because. I think she must be beyond the near umbra. She's not someplace we'll be able to find her."
Thomas shakes his head. "No, I mean the jackass who opened the grate for those giant rats." He looks as though he's about to go on, but Kavi decidedly distracts him again. "Wait, wait, what's this?"
Pack> Alexandra lets out a mental equivalent of a sigh. "Most of the things I can think of to talk about wouldn't be much better. And they're not things I'd talk about with any of these people. But I'll try."
Pack> Flint says, "Just to me, now. Not aloud, don't need to aloud. Music, anything except the. Vampire."
Pack> Alexandra says, "You ever seen Little Shop of Horrors? My mom loves that musical. And it's real. Or sort of. No singing, and they're not aliens. But I guess you know about the fight with the plants."
Pack> Flint says, "I saw part of it, a few times. Never all the way through. Ky didn't tell me much about, about the fight, itself."
Flint glances over at Kavi every so often, but like his packmate, he's a little lost in thought, and he settles to sit on the floor near Alexandra.
Nicodemus keeps his mouth shut and looks between Kavi and Thomas to see if more information is forthcoming.
Alexandra looks a bit surprised at the mention of someone missing in the Umbra, so it seems her attention wasn't entirely turned inward.
Pack> Alexandra says, "Five against three. Most of them were big. And they moved pretty quickly, for plants. Don't know how they sensed us, since no eyes or ears. Plus were right next to the Wal-Mart parking lot. We should have just run them over with the car."
"Riley," Kavi says to Thomas. "She's a Glass Walker. A ragabash. There… There was a problem, before, and yesterday, when she was in the umbra with some other people, a Griffin spirit came and took her. We tried Questing Stone, both in the realm and in the umbra, but it failed both times. I wasn't sure… I sent Masao to talk to Slug and Holland to find Ishmael. Slug got back to me, earlier. And. They know she's still alive, but. Even through the pack-link, they can't feel her. There's no place in the realm that would be far enough for that…"
"Gr—" Thomas starts, and then sits up straighter. "Wait, wait, that name's familiar. Riley. The Riley that killed our local Red Talon serial murderer?"
Flint takes a breath in. "That Riley," Flint adds in, then looks up at Alexandra, then back to Kavi. The younger galliard's as calm as he's probably going to get, though, just waiting, for now.
Alexandra reaches down to put a hand on Flint's shoulder, squeezing gently.
Pack> Flint says, "Wyld does, weird things. They might have tasted, or smelled. Or. Guess the Wyld's escaping the bawn now… Great. Anyone see the plants, or?"
Nicodemus processes all this information, punctuating it with a muted, "Good lord."
Kavi nods, confirming Thomas's suspicion and Flint's response. "A theurge might be able to find her. Mouse could. But. I don't know if Nieve can, but. Maybe. And if not… Maybe one of the Rangers."
Pack> Alexandra says, "It was a Wal-Mart parking lot. The cop that showed up said he was kin, which kept it from being a total disaster on that front. Nik can't jam cameras or cell phones."
Thomas rubs his face; slowly, starting with his nose and working up to his forehead. "…Tell me about her. I ain't never met her, just heard her name in connection to that killing. Who is she, this Riley?"
Flint fidgets a little now, though it stills at the touch to his shoulder, and he turns his attention to his breathing for a little. "Promised," he murmurs, mostly to himself but audible in general.
Alexandra aims an odd look at Thomas when he asks a question like that, then turns her attention to Kavi, curious now how he'll answer it.
Nicodemus moves to settle on to one of the duct-taped arm rests of the couch, taking a load off his feet and giving him an opportunity to absorb information.
Kavi frowns and turns away, pacing a semi-circle around the chair. Coming up behind it, he sets his hands on the leather back. "It's… She's a ragabash. It. It took her a long time to… to learn when to stop. And. And sometimes, even now— Salem made her leave the tenement, for a while, because she still didn't know." His gaze drops to his hands, looking to his thumbs at the seam. "But she's a Glass Walker, too. With everything that means. And. And protecting people—"
Thomas tips his chin back, regarding Kavi quietly. Expectantly.
Flint starts to fidget again, more, enough that he pushes to his feet, but the cliath galliard doesn't interrupt anything, eventually crouching to lean on the wall next to Alexandra. But unlike his packmate, Flint leans his forehead on the wall facing away from everyone else.
Alexandra crouches down so that she's beside Flint instead of standing over him, shoulder to shoulder with him, though she continues to face the rest of the room.
Flint edges a little closer, enough for physical contact with his packmate, and that steadies him for now.
Nicodemus rubs at his chin with his index finger and thumb, a gesture that indicates thoughtfullness. "The Red Talon needed to be stopped. Val said the police were starting to get clues. It wasn't her case. And it'd only be a matter of time before…." He lets the unspoken possibility hang in the air. "And, also, you just don't go around killing people. Because it's wrong." He offers what might be incisive insight from a kinfolk. "You don't think that Riley's actions are maybe linked to her being abducted by a Griffon spirit? I'm guessing spirits don't normally abduct garou, at least?"
Kavi frowns, still looking down at his hands, but eventually looks across to Nick. "I think so. I think it was. But I don't know. I'm… I'm not a theurge." He swallows. "What she did? It… I don't know. I know why she did it. I know… I know she thought she had to. But. But the way she did it, it's not our way."
"Ain't meaning to be rude," Thomas says, without raising his voice, "but I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me more about her. Troubled Ragabash. Pissed off Griffin. What rank is she? And this pack of hers, big? They got a Theurge? Got other friends rushing to help her?"
Pack> Flint says, "Don't want to interrupt, but wish Nick and Thomas would go. Can't, still… still need to tell you, what, everything, and. All."
Flint fidgets more, and eventually manages to sit down all the way, head bowed against the wall. There's less tension, now. "Riley-rhya… he's fostern. Ishmael-rhya's a theurge. They're. Slug-rhya, don't know, if anyone else, is in the pack." Flint offers a few answers, then goes quiet.
Pack> Alexandra says, "Seems like there's a lot going on right now. But he sure is asking a lot of questions. Why does he care about all of that? Not really any of his business, not that that's ever stopped him before."
Flint adds, after a moment, very quietly. "Kavi-rhya…?" It trails into a question. "I need you to tell Lex."
Alexandra looks to Flint, expression faintly worried, then back to Kavi.
Nicodemus turns to regard Flint, observing his words and reversed-face-against-the-wall-while-sitting posture. Almost mirroring Alexandra, Nick looks concerned about Flint's condition.
Kavi shakes his head after Flint answer Thomas. "I. I don't know much more than that. I know… Cheese Doodle went with them. On their Totem Quest. But. But somehow. She didn't end up as part of the pack." He swallows again as he draws back from the chair and lets his hands fall to his sides, but he shakes his head at Flint as well, despite the boy's back being turned. "Not now," he says aloud.
Thomas rubs his forehead rather harshly now. "Fucking Fostern beyond the Penumbra." His attitude has changed. There's a hint of frustration and annoyance about him, and the easy casualness of before has vanished. He flicks a glance at Flint, and then back to Kavi. "His packmates, they all Fostern too?"
Flint doesn't offer another objection, nor does he move from his current seated position. "Soon?" he asks. "I. I can't, Kavi-rhya. Want to, but I can't. And I need her to know."
Alexandra actually seems to be a little relieved at Kavi's answer, for whatever reason. "When they're done talking, Flint. We can wait that long."
Pack> Alexandra says, "Flint, don't. Even if you trust your kin enough, not in front of that other one."
Pack> Flint says, "When he goes?"
Pack> Alexandra agrees, "When he goes."
Flint moves just enough to lean against Alexandra, going silent and nodding, his focus inward and on his breathing again.
Nicodemus uses a hand to motion between himself and Thomas. "There's not really anything that Mr. Lee and I can do to help Riley, other than to perhaps spread the news further. Unless I'm missing something that kin can do in a situation like this?"
Kavi's gaze focuses sharply on Thomas, brow deeply furrowed. "Yes," he answers, but there's a hesitation in his voice. "They're both fostern."
Thomas looks sidelong toward Nick for a long moment, then back to Kavi. "Anybody tried that gift? Ragabash, I think. You've got higher ranked Theurges, right?"
Pack> Flint centres himself, slowly. "Come on, we can… wait in my apartment. It'll, be better. Tell Kavi that we're going to?"
Flint finally gets to his feet, after looking at Alexandra a moment, and then with a nod of some silent agreement, heads for the elevator and waits for her.
Alexandra looks over to the elder of the two Galliard as she crosses toward the elevator with Flint. "We'll be upstairs, Kavi-rhya, so long as you don't mind me being up there again?"
Flint's gaze picks up from the floor, briefly over the kin, to look approximately at Kavi, breath half-held.
Nicodemus stays silent while the garou finish their business.
Most of Kavi's attention remains on Thomas, but he nods to the cliaths. "As long as you're with him," he says to the Shadow Lord.
Flint nods once, and steps into the elevator when it arrives, a glance back and nod at Kavi.
Pack> Flint sighs, frustrated. "I feel so… I should be better at this, at dealing, at calm. At least, up there it's quiet."
